Celebrating Dr. Randy Schulman: A New Book Release and a Landmark Chapter Contribution

The Optometric Extension Program Foundation (OEPF) is proud to recognize Dr. Randy Schulman, MS, OD, FCOVD, FCSO for two major accomplishments that reflect her lasting impact on vision education and clinical care. This season brings an exciting milestone: Dr. Schulman has released a brand-new book, and she has also contributed a chapter to an upcoming OEPF multi-author volume focused on acquired brain injury.

Her work continues to bridge classroom success, visual development, and evidence-informed practice — empowering both educators and clinicians with tools that make a measurable difference.

Dr. Schulman’s New Book: Vision Improvement Program — “Vision Is Power”

Dr. Schulman’s newest publication, Vision Improvement Program (VIP): “Vision Is Power,” is a comprehensive, user-friendly manual that brings core vision skills into clear focus for the people who support children every day.

Written for educators and professionals alike, the book provides an accessible overview of how visual development influences learning, especially in reading, writing, and long-term academic growth. It clearly explains:

  • the essential vision skills every student relies on
  • how delays or weaknesses may appear in the classroom
  • why these skills matter for performance and confidence

What makes this book especially practical is its built-in 10-week classroom program, designed to help teachers systematically strengthen visual function through engaging, structured activities. Each week includes three activities targeting:

  • oculomotor skill development

  • visual-motor integration

  • visual-perceptual growth

The program includes implementation tips, scoring guidance, and adaptable options for varying age levels — making it flexible for real classrooms and diverse student needs.

VIP is also research-ready. A pilot study in a private school showed students participating in the program demonstrated measurable improvements in DIBELS reading and math scores, compared to peers who spent equal time in unstructured free play. The result is a teaching tool that supports learning outcomes while giving vision professionals a meaningful framework for collaboration with schools.

A Second Milestone: Chapter Contribution to “Revisiting the Visual and Vestibular Consequences of Acquired Brain Injuries”

revisiting In addition to her new release, Dr. Schulman also contributed a chapter to a forthcoming OEPF book titled: “Revisiting the Visual and Vestibular Consequences of Acquired Brain Injuries.”

This multi-author volume explores the complex visual and vestibular challenges that can follow acquired brain injury (ABI), offering clinical insight and practical approaches for care. The book is authored by Marc B. Taub, OD, MS, EdD; Daniella Rutner, OD, MS, MBA; and Christina Esposito, OD, alongside several contributing authors through OEPF.

Dr. Schulman’s inclusion in this project highlights her deep expertise in functional vision and rehabilitation, and her ongoing role in strengthening the profession’s understanding of ABI-related visual outcomes.
